Antique Japanese Glass Fishing Float Ukidama Buoy Ball 11”
Japanese blown glass floats (‘Ukidama’) were used in the fishing industry to help keep fishing nets, longlines, or droplines from sinking to the bottom of the sea. These have since been replaced by aluminum and lightweight plastics and foam, these buoys are now often used as decoration.
This small float is a clear green blue color with natural bubbles and ripples from the glass-blowing process. It has a thick nub on the bottom where the ball was sealed before cooling. This ukidama is definitely a conversation piece.
